The inspiration came from Neiman Marcus/Horchow where I got the paw print sham, the quilt and sham, and the 2 knit pillows. I liked the bedskirt that came with the set, but it was too "flowy"/feminine so I had one made in a similar fabric from an online company (familybedding.com). They were fast and offered a great range of styles, like the more masculine one I chose. I also ordered the headboard from an online vendor after receiving fabric swatches. They were very slow and gave me the run around, but I'm happy with the end product.
Looks great. I always find it challenging to work with the white trim that came with our house - it sometimes seems out of place with whatever it is we're trying to do. I like the way you've tied it in with the white on the bed.
Thanks, Damon. That's an interesting point about the trim. Our house is 100 years old, so the trim is extremely thick by this point (and, after drawing vials of blood from the poor kids, thankfully lead free). I can't imagine how time consuming it would be to try to change it now, but I do wonder what it looked like over the years and who decided on the white. In some rooms it works; in others I'd prefer something else, but I wouldn't want to mix trim throughout the house.
I say that it took months to decorate my 3 year-old's first "big boy bedroom", but it was really months of scouring catalogs, stores and the web for dog decor that wasn't Clifford or another cartoon canine, and mere DAYS to put it together.

I wanted a hand crafted look for the knick knacks so I found most of the stuffed and wooden items through etsy - everyone thinks the beige "ball" on the dresser is a pig - it's supposed to be a pug!
The bench was a lucky find - I wanted a bench or chair, but couldn't find the perfect thing until I randomly got an Art & Architecture catalog, where I found it on the last page.
The Black Dog Licorice canvas came from Ballard - I would have rather bought an inexpensive print, but this was the only version with a dark red border that matched the rest of the red accents in the room. My favorite thing is the 3 paneled installation that I made from canvasses covered in pleather. I freehanded the dog on paper, cut out fabric and then spray glued it on. It's not the only homemade thing, though: my Father In Law sewed all the curtains and the end table is something my husband's ancestors brought over from Italy. Before they left, since they couldn't transport all their china and glassware, they broke it into little pieces and adhered their favorites into a mosaic on top of the table.
